550 megawatts of new gas capacities are going to be built at Varna thermoelectric power station on an investment of 450 million euro, the management of the station, with major shareholder the Movement for Rights and Freedoms’ honorary chairman Ahmed Dogan, has announced.

The two 275 megawatt blocs will be engineered from Siemens technology and will be built by Russian companies. Up to one-third of the gas used will be hydrogen produced by water splitting. The installation will be powered by an 80 megawatt photovoltaic park. The park will cover the area of the former coal ash dump. The technology was chosen because of its high effectivity, the Varna thermoelectric power plant management says. Under the contract signed the new station is to start functioning at the beginning of 2025.
