The last group of participants in the 33rd National Antarctic Expedition is returning to Sofia today, announced the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute.

During the expedition, the building of the new laboratory block was completed and officially opened. In addition, research was carried out on numerous scientific projects, some of them with the participation of scientists from Romania, Montenegro, Abu Dhabi, Greece, Colombia and Portugal.

"This is one of the most successful expeditions so far because we opened the new and modern laboratory that will serve scientists in the next century", said Professor Hristo Pimpirev, Chairman of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute. Among the achievements, he also highlighted the project for studying solar activity, as well as the project by the BNR’s music editor Marina Velikova on the sounds of Antarctica.

The expedition will end on April 11 with the return of the Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii, which is currently approaching the Strait of Gibraltar.
