Greece’s Minister of Defence Nikos Dendias announced that Greece, Bulgaria and Romania are to establish a military mobility corridor in NATO’s Eastern flank.

“Today my Bulgarian and Romanian counterparts, Mr. Atanas Zaprianov and Mr. Angel Tilvar respectively, and I, signed a Letter of Intent regarding the establishment of a Harmonized Military Mobility Corridor, in the margins of the NATO Summit in Washington DC. Following my proposal, we shall have a trilateral meeting in Alexandroupolis in the fall, to discuss the implementation of the intended actions,” Nikos Dendias wrote on the social network X.

The corridor will connect Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis, Varna and Constanta. The biggest NATO base in Europe is being constructed near Constanta. The aim of the corridor is to ensure rapid reaction and reinforcements in the event of crisis. The plans for such a military corridor go back to 2016. It has been dubbed “military Schengen” – the term was probably coined by Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, former commander of United States Army Europe.
