Unit 5 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has been temporarily shut down for its scheduled annual maintenance and refuelling, which is expected to last until mid-June this year, the plant's authorities have confirmed.

As part of Kozloduy NPP's diversification initiative, the reactor is loaded with fuel cartridges manufactured by the US company Westinghouse.

During each annual refuelling period, a quarter of the cartridges in the reactor will be replaced. This strategic approach will ensure a gradual transition to the new nuclear fuel over a total period of four years.
