200 fires a day in June 2024

Since the beginning of the month, there have been almost 200 fire accidents a day, said Chief Commissioner Aleksandar Dzhartov, director of the Fire Safety and Civil Protection Directorate. 


The main reason for the increase in the number of incidents is the hot weather. Compared to the same month last year, there were 1000 more accidents in June 2024. At the same time, firefighters' equipment needs to be repaired or replaced due to depreciation. 


Human activity is the main cause of forest fires, be it a live cigarette butt or a spark from agricultural machinery. The fines, if a perpetrator is proven to have caused the fire, are between 200 and 2,000 leva (100-1000 euro), which is minuscule compared to the damage, Dzhartov said.
