The capital of Bulgaria Sofia came second in the European Green Capital in 2023, with Tallinn, Estonia coming first.

Deputy Mayor Desislava Bileva commented that Sofia has improved its environmental indicators as regards air, waste, adaptation to climate change, rivers and waters.

“Data also show that transport is no longer such a major pollutant, thanks to the metro,” she added. In her words the urban transportation vehicles have been replaced almost entirely and now they are “environmentally clean, Euro 6, zero emissions”.

Sofia municipality is continuing its work on projects for a cleaner and greener city, Deputy Mayor Bileva said.
