The trade unions from the state-owned coal-fired power station Martitsa Iztok 2 warn that they will soon initiate protest and strike action to protect the functioning of the power plant.

In an open letter they express concern over the planned transfer of the power station to the free market entirely as the cost price of the electricity it produces is too high. According to the regulatory body the power plant’s selling price is 210 Leva /107 euro/ per Mwh which is 76% higher than the household electricity price, making the electricity produced by Martitsa Iztok 2 non-marketable. The trade unions say that unless steps are taken there is a risk that Martitsa Iztok 2 power station will stop working, leading to an electricity shortage in the region.
