11 years ago, in 2007, Bulgaria became a member of the EU, but the process started long ago. I am proud that I have my small contribution for the EU accession of Bulgaria. This was what EC President Jean-Claude Juncker said at the official opening of the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council.

He recalled another historical moment of Bulgaria's accession to the EU, when in 1977, the song "Izlel e Delyo Haidutin" performed by singer Valya Balkanska flew in space.

Jean Claude Juncker was firm that Bulgaria's place was in Europe and the Eurozone. The Commission supports you, he said, adding that the Bulgarian Presidency coincided with a key moment when a number of significant initiatives were under way to determine the future of the EU.
