The Ministry of the Interior has submitted 13,000 reports about poor road conditions in 2024. This was revealed in an interview with Nova TV by Chief Commissioner Maria Boteva, who added that more than 2,000 additional reports were submitted in the first two months of 2025.

Between 3 and 5 April, the authorities inspected more than 22,000 cars, as well as many trucks, motorcycles and buses. These inspections led to the issuance of more than 10,300 fines and more than 1,800 warnings for various violations.

The driver of the truck responsible for the death of 12-year-old Siyana near Pleven was reported to have about 20 traffic violations, mainly related to vehicle signalling and speed limits.

"Those who frequently use the Telish-Radomirtsi stretch of road are aware of its dangers, but they are often unprepared when they reach the bend in bad weather, such as rain or frost," Boteva said. The traffic police had filed two reports on this area last year.

In the wake of the tragic accident, a petition has been launched in Pleven calling for the resignation of the Road Infrastructure Agency, which is responsible for ensuring safe and well-maintained roads. The organisers of the petition claim that the current state of Bulgaria's roads reflects significant institutional negligence and inaction.
