Political parties have commented on the Constitutional Court's decision to declare the results of the October 27 elections illegal. The court ruled that the Velichie party had passed the 4% threshold and would enter Parliament, and that the election of 16 MPs was illegal after the results of the 27 October elections had been recalculated.
Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev of GERB commented on whether the government and the majority were in danger: "A government that is focused only on survival will do nothing," Donchev said. I am not saying that the issue is not important, but as long as there is a horizon, we will work with all our strength".
According to GERB leader Boyko Borissov, the Velichie party’s entry into Parliament will hinder Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone.
"The two parties with the largest number of illegally elected MPs are DPS-New Beginning and GERB," said former PM Kiril Petkov. Asked whether the court ruling would affect the governing majority and whether PP-DB were ready to enter into talks with the government, Kiril Petkov said: "From our point of view, nothing has changed at the moment. The sanitary cordon has not been respected. So as long as DPS-New Beginning and Delyan Peevski are walking around as the ruling opposition, it is out of the question for us to hold talks with them.
Nadezhda Yordanova of We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) called for the decision not to be used for another political confrontation, but to find a way for a common political consensus and amendment of the electoral code.
Kostadin Kostadinov, leader of Vazrazhdane, said that Velichie's entry into the National Assembly was a forgery that would strengthen the position of Delyan Peevski and "the government will become his property".
"Following the Constitutional Court's decision, public doubts about the integrity and transparency of the electoral process remain unresolved. We believe that urgent changes to the electoral legislation are needed to reassure Bulgarian citizens that every vote really counts and will be counted fairly," the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) stated.
