There is no emergency or threat to national security, but there are many dynamic changes in the international security environment, Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov told Nova TV. This is how he answered the question of why the Security Council at the Council of Ministers was convened.

“By changes, we mean the approach to the war in Ukraine, with all the related problems regarding the peace agreement, military assistance to Ukraine, the differences in the approach of the new US administration to achieving peace in Ukraine compared to its European allies,” Zapryanov said. He specified that the Council had considered not only Ukraine, but also other conflict zones.

Bulgaria is interested in preserving unity in NATO and the presence of the US in ensuring the security of Europe as a key task, the minister said. Europe's approach is that peace in Ukraine should be negotiated with the participation of Russia, Ukraine, the EU and the US, and most importantly, that this peace should have stable security guarantees for a long-term period, the minister said. According to him, this is where the difference in approach lies and a common solution must be found.

Asked whether Europe is able to replace the US, if President Trump is to be believed that he will immediately stop aid to Ukraine, Zapryanov commented that this is another problem that has been analyzed. There are different perceptions from the point of view of the political forces in Bulgaria. Generally speaking, it is difficult for anyone to completely replace the US and its aid at the moment, Zapryanov pointed out.
