Constitutional Court orders recount of ballots

The Constitutional Court has ordered the Central Election Commission to recount the ballots from the October 2024 parliamentary elections and to announce whether any changes in the composition of the 51st Parliament are necessary. Depending on the results, the commission may have to redistribute seats.

Before making its decision, the court authorised experts to check the ballot papers from 2,204 polling stations out of a total of around 13,000. They found discrepancies in the number of valid votes in almost half of them.
The recount will determine whether the Velichie party, which fell short of the four per cent threshold in the 27 October elections by less than 30 votes, will enter the National Assembly.
Applications for the election to be annulled were filed by We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria, Vazrazhdane, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), There is Such a Nation (ITN) and Velichie.
