Bulgarian producers want more farmers' markets

The situation in the country illustrates the urgent need for the state to create conditions for holding more farmers' markets, where farmers can sell their produce directly to consumers. This was stated by the Bulgarian Farmers' Union in connection with the second day of the boycott of food retail chains due to high prices, which is taking place today.

According to the farmers, these markets will lead to increased competition, reduce dependence on large food chains and eliminate the many resellers and traders who add markups throughout the chain.

It is pointed out that currently farmers sell vegetables, fruits and milk at extremely low purchase prices, while end consumers pay significantly higher amounts in stores.

According to the farmers, another factor aggravating their situation is imports from other EU countries, where farmers receive significantly higher subsidies, which allows them to sell their produce at significantly more competitive prices.
