The "Stand up, Bulgaria" citizens' initiative is collecting signatures for the introduction of a cap on bank fees.

The initiative's leader, former ombudsman Maya Manolova, noted that there was already a draft law, submitted by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) - United Left, which had not yet been considered by the Budget Committee.

The proposed texts suggest that clients of each bank should pay for certain services exactly what they cost the banks to provide.  According to Manolova, the methodology for setting prices should be developed by the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).

"Since the beginning of 2025, banks have started to increase their fees again, with some fee increases of 20 to 40 per cent, affecting deposits, withdrawals, transfers and ATM transactions," Manolova said. The petition is being collected on the pavement in front of the BNB building.
