National forum seeks solutions for independent election process

A national roundtable on the topic of “Changes to the Electoral Code, guaranteeing the conduct of fair elections in Bulgaria” will be held today in Sofia at the initiative of the “Awakeners” civic platform.

At the forum, the organizers will put on the agenda the need for key changes in the election process. According to them, members of the Central Election Commission and the Regional Election Commissions should be elected through a competition and on an expert principle and not on the basis of party quotas. Another proposal concerns the introduction of criminal liability for members of the election commissions if vote substitution or signing of documents with false content is proven.

“Our goal is to propose a model that will ensure real independence of the election process and the CEC will become an independent expert body that will not work under the dictates of political parties”, said Simeon Slavchev, one of the organizers of the round table.

The event brings together representatives of the parliamentary parties, the Public Council to the CEC, civic and non-governmental organizations.
