DPS turns 35. Leaders of the party's two wings greet voters

The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) celebrates its 35th anniversary today. The two wings of the movement - DPS-New Beginning, led by Delyan Peevski, and Ahmed Dogan's Alliance for Rights and Freedoms (ARF) - are marking the event separately. The split followed a rift between the two leaders before last year's parliamentary elections.

In line with tradition, the founder of DPS Ahmed Dogan and the Alliance will be celebrating at the Ramada hotel in the capital. The ARF leadership has addressed its supporters to mark the anniversary:

"Dr Ahmed Dogan and the Bulgarian ethnic model he built, which has gained international recognition, have made a key contribution to maintaining ethnic peace in Bulgaria, integrating into Western structures and building trust with the country's Western partners," said Alliance for Rights and Freedoms leader Dzevdet Chakarov. He added that the anniversary was an opportunity to give well-deserved recognition to all those who had laid the foundations and developed the party over the years with their zeal, courage and dedication.
For his part, DPS-New Beginning leader Delyan Peevski said:

"I took on the mission that you will never be second class in politics, and here I pledge this to you: You'll never be relegated to a second-class party, and you'll never be pushed to the backstage of politics." He announces that the task of the party leadership is to bring back to Bulgaria "our brothers and sisters" who are earning a decent living abroad, and to provide them with jobs here so that they can be reunited with their families.
