Natalia Kiselova elected speaker of parliament

On the 25th day of its work swearing-in, and after 10 failed attempts the new 51st National Assembly finally has a Speaker. Assoc. Prof. Natalia Kiselova of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) was elected with 140 votes in favour, 93 against and no abstentions.
Kiselova thanked both those who had supported her and those who had not. She said that she would work for the benefit of all parties. Compromises are a matter to be discussed, but when a decision is made, it must be respected, she said. There is hope for the country to return to normal governance, but it will not be easy, the new Speaker stressed.

Kiselova was backed by all 18 BSP MPs, 68 GERB-SDS MPs, 35 from We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) and Ahmed Dogan's Alliance for Rights and Freedoms (with 19 votes). Vazrazhdane (34 votes) and Delyan Peevski's DPS-New Beginning (29) voted against. Kiselova was also not supported by the There is Such a People (ITN) and MECH parties.

Natalia Kiselova is 47 years old. She is a professor of constitutional law at the Law Faculty of Sofia University. She was a legal expert in Parliament and in the Ministry of Justice, and Secretary for Legal Affairs to President Rosen Plevneliev.
