Bulgarian Debora Mihaylova, who was brutally slashed with a mock knife by her boyfriend Georgi Georgiev, is one of the victims of violence mentioned by Ursula von der Leyen in her address on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The President of the European Commission pointed out that one in three women becomes a victim of violence at some point in her life.
“On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, let us remember that behind every number there is a face, a name and a story – women like Giulia Cecchettin in Italy, Debora Mihaylova in Bulgaria and Gisèle Pélicot in France,” she said in a video message published on the European Commission website.
Ursula von der Leyen also said that the stories of victims must be told in order to end violence.
