Nikolay Denkov: A "Peevski-wrapped GERB" leaves PP-DB in opposition

"A Peevski-wrapped GERB - we cannot work with this combination" - former Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov told journalists ahead of the We Continue the Change National Council meeting, adding that "we have already seen the result of this kind of work and we have learnt our lesson".

Asked whether We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) would support a Speaker of the National Assembly proposed by GERB, Nikolay Denkov recalled the coalition's declaration of a "sanitary cordon" around DPS-New Beginning leader Delyan Peevski. "It is important that Peevski should not be in the decision-making teams in this National Assembly, that he should not be in any way connected with decisions about the government, as well as the adoption of anti-corruption laws aimed at eliminating intimidation tactics," the politician stressed.

If GERB does not sign the declaration, the PP-DB will not support its proposal for parliamentary speaker. "They have a choice, and that choice is to remove Peevski from their entourage and seek agreement and a majority for the government. The other option is for Borissov to govern with Peevski, as he has done so far, and for the others to be in opposition," Denkov said.

A week ago, the PP-DB sent to the parliamentary groups a declaration on "freeing institutions and the electoral process from the influence of corruption", BTA recounts. The declaration has three points: the establishment of a cordon sanitaire around Peevski and his group; a programme for the work of Parliament with measures to stop the collapse of Bulgaria's institutions, limit illegitimate influence on them and guarantee their independence; the establishment of an ad hoc committee to investigate the facts and circumstances.
