The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will check whether hospitals have falsely reported medical treatment without the patient having been admitted to the hospital, the fund's governor Stanimir Mihaylov, who was reinstated by the Constitutional Court a few days ago, told BNR.

According to the governor of the National Health Insurance Fund, the additional costs reported by hospitals to NHIF have increased by nearly 10% on average per month for the first six months of the year. "We do not have a clear answer as to what is causing this increased volume of hospital medical care. There may be some fake hospitalizations – we even have alerts in this regard", said Stanimir Mihaylov.

The National Health Insurance Fund will also analyse a list of insured individuals who, according to documents, have been admitted to the hospital dozens of times since the beginning of the year. "There are individuals with 37 hospitalizations, others with 32, and some with 20. We will examine the clinical pathways under which they were admitted and make inquiries with these patients where necessary", Stanimir Mihaylov added.
