30 public buildings illuminated in green tonight to mark European Donation Day

30 buildings across the country will be illuminated in green tonight to mark European Donation Day – the European Day for Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation, the Executive Agency Medical Supervision has announced. The idea is to show solidarity for the Council of Europe initiative for bringing public attention to organ donation.

There are currently 836 patients on the transplant waiting list in Bulgaria – 770 need a new a kidney, 22 – a heart, 19 – a liver and 10 – a lung transplant. One person who is brain dead can save up to 8 human lives by organ donation, and improve the life of up to 100 people by tissue donation.  

The buildings in Sofia that will be illuminated in green will be the historical building of the National Assembly, the Vasil Levski National stadium, the National Palace of Culture, the hospitals Lozenets and Sofiamed.

There will be different events throughout this month dedicated to this cause. In memory of the donors, roses will be planted in the Donors Garden near the National Palace of Culture, and new leaves will be added to the Tree of Life at the Military Medical Academy. A motorcycle rally will take place which will end with a concert in Narodno Subranie square.
