Italian town of Brunate to celebrate Bulgaria's Independence and the Slaveykov family

The 116th anniversary of the proclamation of Bulgaria's Independence will be solemnly celebrated in the picturesque Italian town of Brunate on Lake Como. It is organized by the Bulgarian-Italian Society "Pencho Slaveykov" with the assistance of the Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Milan and the Municipality of Brunate.   

The beginning of the two-day celebrations under the title "The Independence of Bulgaria and the Slaveykov family" will be held on September 21 at 4 pm in the library of Brunate. On this occasion, Milena and Elena Slaveykov will present the family tree of their ancestors from the prominent Bulgarian Slaveykov family.

Prominent Bulgarian poet Pencho Slaveykov spent the last days of his life in Brunate on Lake Como, where he died in 1912 at the age of 46. Opposite the house where he lived is the poet's library and garden with his bust-monument, which was placed there in 2007.

Guests at the celebration will also be able to see the exhibitions "Treasure of the Word" and "Bulgaria's Natural Wonders". There will also be a tasting of typical Bulgarian dishes, as well as folk songs and dances with the Ritmika folklore workshop from Milan. 

Nashentsi folklore group
The official Independence Day ceremony will take place the following day, 22 September, with the participation of the Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Milan, Ana Paskaleva, and the Mayor of Bunate, Simone Rizzi. The folklore group "Nashentsi" and the children from the Bulgarian dance school "Veselie" at the Bulgarian school in Milan will take care of the good mood of everyone. 

There will also be a screening of the documentary In the Footsteps of Alcek, which will be presented by the film director Dr. Rositsa Lazarova.
