At today's meeting, the Supreme Judicial Council officially resumed the procedure for electing a new chief prosecutor. The election is scheduled for January 16, 2025, and candidates must present their concepts until October 24. Candidates must have at least 12 years of experience, possess the ability to adhere to a high ethical standard, and have high professional competence.

At the end of August, We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) coalition called on the current SJC not to elect a new Prosecutor-General because the SJC's mandate had expired. DPS co-leader Delyan Peevski, for his part, called on the current SJC to proceed with the election of a new chief prosecutor.

In 2023, following the dismissal of Ivan Geshev, Borislav Sarafov was appointed as acting Prosecutor-General in his place.
