"There are many places in Bulgaria that preserve the memory of the struggles for national liberation, but the glory of the Shipka Epopee remains unsurpassed," President Rumen Radev wrote on his Facebook page on the occasion of the 147th anniversary of the series of fierce battles between the defenders of the Shipka Pass in the Balkan Mountains and the Turkish army during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878).

The Head of State stressed that the heroic deeds of the Bulgarian volunteer fighters remained a pillar of national memory, of love for the Fatherland, a symbol of the reborn Bulgarian spirit and of sacrifice in the name of freedom.

"On this day, we bow once again before the sons of the Russians and many other brotherly nations who fought in the army of the Russian Emperor Alexander II, together with our volunteers. To all who shed their blood for Bulgaria," wrote Rumen Radev. In his words, it is the duty of all Bulgarians to cherish the legacy of our ancestors and to carry it intact through time for the sake of future generations.
