''There has not been a decision either by the Ministry of Energy or the Council of Ministers to build a deep geological repository for nuclear waste'', caretaker Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov said at a hearing in Parliament. According to Minister Malinov, only preliminary studies have been conducted to identify suitable locations for such a facility.

According to Vladimir Malinov, suitable geological conditions are found in Northern Bulgaria- in the marl deposits of the Moesian Plate. "So far, no field studies have been carried out at specific sites on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria", Vladimir Malinov stressed. He clarified that according to the adopted strategy, the country must build a repository by 2050. If it fails to do so, Bulgaria will be unable to develop its own nuclear capacity.

Due to the changed geopolitical environment, Bulgaria can no longer rely on the agreement with the Russian Federation for the storage and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. ''In the medium term an appropriate repository should be built on the Kozloduy NPP site, and a sustainable long-term solution should be sought for the disposal of nuclear waste'', Minister Malinov went on to say.
