After more than three hours of heated debate, the Bulgarian Parliament has banned propaganda, promotion or incitement, directly or indirectly, of ideas or views related to non-traditional sexual orientation and/or the definition of gender identity other than biological in schools.

The amendments to the Education Act, as proposed by Vazrazhdane party were supported by 135 MPs from GERB-SDS, Vazrazhdane party, MRF, ITN, BSP for Bulgaria, and independent MPs. 57 MPs from PP-DB and DPS voted against. 8 GERB-SSD deputies abstained.

During the debates between the readings, Elisaveta Belobradova (PP-DB) objected to the ban on the grounds that an election campaign was being carried out.

Kostadin Kostadinov, the proposer of the motion, pointed out that it was about anti-human ideology, which would be put to an end by the texts in the law. He was supported by MRF MP Yordan Tsonev, who quoted the Bible: "And God created man in his own image... male and female he created them' and stressed that this had nothing to do with tolerance of differences. "Children must be left to develop according to God's laws," Tsonev added.
