The Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional and invalid most of the changes to the Constitution voted by the 49th National Assembly at the end of 2023. The case was initiated at the request of President Rumen Radev and 48 MPs.
Magistrates overruled all provisions related to the judiciary. With 6 to 6 votes they kept the newly introduced order of appointing an acting prime minister and a government responsible to the parliament. The mandate of the old parliament will continue until the election and establishment of the new National Assembly. The new norms in the basic law, which allow persons with dual citizenship to become MPs and ministers, were not cancelled. The decision was made by all 12 constitutional judges.
