The new bridges between Bulgaria and Romania are a matter of political will

The start of the major repair of the Danube Bridge near Ruse is the reason for a serious conversation about the connectivity between Bulgaria and Romania. Along the 409 km long border, there are just two bridges and 5 ferries, some of which do not work around the clock, Bulgarian Ambassador to Romania Radko Vlaikov said at the ceremony for the renovation of the Bulgarian section of the Danube Bridge near Ruse.

Only one bridge near Vidin has been completed since the entry of Bulgaria and Romania into the EU, Vlaikov recalled. There is a signed memorandum from 2019 with five defined points for building new bridges over the river. I hope building the second bridge near Ruse would not take 13 years, like the one near Vidin, the diplomat said. "The question of building new bridges and launching ferries is not so much about money, but about political will. On the Bulgarian side, this will has always existed," the ambassador pointed out.
