Bulgaria has a crucial role to play in the connectivity of several regions. It lies at a crossroads between the Balkan Peninsula, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

This was stated by Deputy Transport Minister Anna Natova at a meeting with Matthew Boyce, former US Assistant Secretary of State and Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute, Washington, and the Chairman of the Sofia Security Forum Yordan Bozhilov.

"Relations between Bulgaria and the Black Sea countries in the field of transport are important not only for the trade corridors between Europe and Asia, but also for the reconstruction process in Ukraine," Natova added.

Of paramount importance for Bulgaria is the construction of a third bridge over the Danube at Ruse-Giurgiu, Natova said. Preparations are at the stage of a feasibility study, which is being financed with EU funds.

Natova added that the reopening of the ferry line at Ruse-Giurgiu is crucial to ease the North-South traffic. Every day 3,500 trucks pass through this section. With the repair of the Danube bridge at Ruse starting soon, traffic is expected to be seriously hampered. "The Bulgarian side is fully prepared to resume ferry services, an operator has been chosen and we are counting on the Romanian side to take the necessary action," Anna Natova added.

Meanwhile, BTA reported that the Romanian government today approved a draft law that provides for the restoration of ferry services to serve both banks at the Danube Bridge.
