Bulgarian Judges Association urges MPs to set up a new interim committee on the case of Martin Bozhanov aka The Notary

The Bulgarian Judges Association has urged MPs to complete the ongoing fact-checking of undue influence on the judiciary and the prosecution, in order to initiate a recovery process in the judicial power.

The largest judges' organisation is demanding that a temporary commission be set up to continue the work of its predecessor in gathering information on the links of Martin Bozhanov aka The Notary and his group to judges, prosecutors and officials, as well as other publicly known attempts at influence peddling, such as the Eight Dwarfs circle around former investigator Petyo Petrov - The Euro and the private clubs for judges.

Martin Bozhanov, who was murdered, was the owner of the SS Secret Club for elected judges and prosecutors. He had been accused of property fraud, bribery and extortion.

The judges also expressed their hope that the legislature will prioritise judicial reform. This reform should not only guarantee judicial independence and prosecutorial autonomy, but also ensure an accountable and effective judiciary that applies the law fairly to all citizens.
