''Terem'' company has been ranked first in the competition for the overhaul of six engines for the MiG-29 fighter aircraft. This is clear from the documents uploaded on the Bulgarian public procurement portal. The repair will cost EUR 118,370,000. A Polish factory, which traditionally participates in the same procedures, is ranked second.
Due to a lack of candidates in 2023, the Ministry of Defense canceled a procurement for the supply of refurbished engines. Bulgaria has been guarding its airspace with MiG-29s since 1989 when the country acquired 22 of the then most advanced front-line fighters. They remained in service after Bulgaria’s accession to NATO 20 years ago. The military reports difficulties in maintaining the aircraft, especially after the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The country aims to maintain the aircraft at least until the full introduction of the new F-16s in 2030.
