We celebrate World Turtle Day

On May 23, we celebrate World Turtle Day, the most endangered group of vertebrates on earth.

Only two out of a total of 58 species of land turtles live in Bulgaria. They are protected by the Biodiversity Act and trading in them, keeping them in apartment yards, and displaying them as an attraction are prohibited.

According to experts, only 4 out of 1,000 turtles produce offspring, and encounters between them are becoming increasingly rare due to their extreme vulnerability to rapidly changing environments and, above all, to human interference. Although they are centenarians, few of them even reach puberty.

Currently, there are 328 species of turtles in the world - terrestrial, freshwater and marine, as half of them are threatened with extinction.
