Reporters without Borders: Bulgaria climbs to 59th place in media freedom

Bulgaria has climbed 12 positions to 59th place in Reporters Without Borders' annual media freedom ranking for 2024, published on the occasion of May 3 - World Press Freedom Day. Bulgaria significantly improves its position in the global rating, which includes 180 countries. However, it remains at the bottom within the EU, where it climbs only one place to 23rd position. It is followed only by Hungary, Cyprus, Malta and Greece.

According to the organization, the better performance of Bulgaria in 2023 is mainly due to the fact that in the past year the government with Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov has shown readiness for reforms related to the media environment.

At the same time, however, the organization for the protection of journalists criticizes the authorities for failing to introduce systematic measures to solve Bulgaria's "endemic problems", including the growing number of SLAPP cases.

Regardless of the progress, Reporters Without Borders notes that Bulgaria's political, economic and security indicators remain relatively low.
