According to Georgi Georgiev, leader of the GERB-SDS group in Sofia city council, ten per cent, or a whopping 325, of Sofia city council employees have been sacked, despite promises by Sofia mayor Vassil Terziev during his election campaign that he would not carry out a political purge. The dismissal of these workers cost the citizens of Sofia 1.4 million leva (715,000 euro) in severance pay, he said. "For that amount, the mayor could have built 30 or 40 playgrounds in the neighbourhoods," the councillor pointed out.

In response to the allegations, Deputy Mayor for Finance Ivan Vasilev announced that 128 employees, or 8.9 per cent of the municipality's workforce, had left since the new administration took office. Of these, 41 had resigned by mutual agreement and 20 at the initiative of the employer in exchange for agreed severance packages. This cost Sofia municipality a total of BGN 727 880 (372,000 euro).

"It is best to work with facts and figures," commented Mayor Vassil Terziev laconically.
