We consider it unacceptable to prohibit access to literature that is related to persons and events from the common history of Bulgaria and North Macedonia. We insist on the immediate cessation of such actions, reads a position of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The statement comes on the occasion of a case from April 8, in which a representative of the Bulgarian community in North Macedonia who is also a Bulgarian citizen was not allowed to enter the territory of North Macedonia by the border authorities at the "Delchevo" checkpoint, because of his possession of 10 books.
"It is absolutely unacceptable in the 21st century to witness actions, by which the authorities of a country prevent the exercise of fundamental rights for democratic societies, such as the right to free communication and access to information. Even more worrying is the fact that these events are taking place in a country that has set itself the goal of EU integration and declares its attachment to the values and principles of the community," the Foreign Ministry said.
