Metro workers take to the streets in protest

Workers at Sofia's metro are to take to the streets today to protest for higher wages. The workers are also prepared to blockade the Serdika metro station, next to the company's head office.

They are concerned that the agreement signed with Sofia mayor Vasil Terziev on 26 February to increase wages by 15% will not be implemented as signed.

According to the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), the problem in the capital's metro is the imbalance in the basic salary, with the wage gap for the same position currently reaching BGN 1,000 (EUR 500). For example, there are train operators with a basic salary of BGN 1,600 (EUR 818) and others with a basic salary of BGN 2 600 (EUR 1,329).
