After the elections for the European Parliament, I expect a decision that Bulgaria and Romania can join Schengen also by land, said the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas.

Progress should be expected at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2025. I think that what was done by Bulgaria and Romania for their accession to Schengen exceeded what was expected of them, the EU official told BTA. He added that the first step for air and sea de facto accession is for both countries to enter Schengen.

European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ylva Johansson said that from March 31, Bulgaria and Romania will have to implement all Schengen agreements.

"For me, it remains a top priority that the border control between Bulgaria and Romania and the other member countries be resolved before the end of my mandate (in the autumn of 2024), Johansson added.
