More than one hundred people have been detained in a specialized police operation in Sofia last night, the Sofia Metropolitan Directorate of Interior said.

Yesterday afternoon, the Ministry of Interior increased the presence of police and gendarmerie in the capital due to several cases of fights between Bulgarians and migrants and a fight in the refugee centre in Ovcha Kupel residential district. Among the detainees is a 16-year-old person who led the group of Bulgarians who attacked British students of Pakistani descent in central Sofia. He is known to police and will be charged with robbery as belongings were taken from the victims.

Most of the detainees were released, said Commissioner Miroslav Danailov, Deputy Director of the Sofia Metropolitan Directorate of Interior. "We will be uncompromising. We have established that the State Agency for Refugees needs to strengthen control over the facilities it is responsible for and have a clear idea of how the protocol is being implemented in them", Commissioner Miroslav Danailov said for Nova TV.

Patrols of the police and gendarmerie will be deployed in the most vulnerable areas, Miroslav Danailov added.
