Vazrazhdane party blocks transportation hubs because of ban on a referendum against the euro

Members and supporters of Vazrazhdane party have again blocked infrastructure facilities near the Bulgarian border - this time the crossroads near the Silistra - Kallarash border checkpoint, as well as the approach to the port of Varna - West.

The reason for their protest action is the decision of the Constitutional Court rejecting the party's request to hold a national referendum to preserve the Bulgarian lev until 2043. According to the protesters, the right of 604,000 Bulgarians to express their opinion was taken away, and democracy was trampled upon.

"We believe that the decision of the Constitutional Court is not correct, it is not in defence of the Bulgarian national interest. The referendum should be held and the Bulgarian people should have their say on whether they agree to pay the price offered to them," said MP from Vazrazhdane Margarita Gencheva.

According to her, if this does not happen, the party is ready to continue the protests throughout the country.

Meanwhile, the leader of Vazrazhdane party Kostadin Kostadinov announced that his party was preparing a petition against the decision of the Constitutional Court on the referendum, which will be sent to the European Parliament after the European elections in June this year. The document will be written together with partners from other countries and supported not only by Bulgarian citizens.
"We will make sure that, through Brussels, the Bulgarian government respects the Constitution and it becomes clear that democracy cannot be trampled on," said Kostadin Kostadinov.
