Citizens and MPs gathered last night in front of the Russian embassy in Sofia where they paid homage to the death of Alexei Navalny with a minute's silence. They blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the opposition leader's assassination and called for an end to his rule.

"The mission of Alexei Navalny will not just continue, but will achieve its goal," said a citizen of Russian and Bulgarian origin.

People chanted "Putin is a murderer", "Glory to Ukraine" and "Russia without Putin", lit candles and left flowers and leaflets with the inscription "Murderers". The protesters briefly blocked traffic in front of the embassy, but there were no incidents.

Russian citizen Alex Stotsky, who until recently was threatened with deportation to Russia, also took part in the demonstration. "I want to thank all the Bulgarians who are here now to support Alexei Navalny. His death is a real tragedy - not only a tragedy for Russia, but also for the whole world," he said.
