The Bulgarian government plans to extend the residence status of Ukrainians who received temporary protection in Bulgaria by one year. The idea will be proposed for public discussion.

Temporary protection cards expire on March 4. This will be yet another extension of the validity periods.

Registration cards are issued by the Bulgarian Refugee Agency. So far, nearly 173,000 Ukrainian refugees have been registered for temporary protection in the country. The number of Ukrainians who stayed in Bulgaria is 70,000 as most of them have jobs or are studying. Nearly 65,000 have their registration cards set to expire on March 4.

According to Eurostat, from the beginning of the war to the end of 2023, only Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Spain have issued more protection documents than Bulgaria. Temporary protection provides Ukrainians with free movement, the right to work, healthcare, education and accommodation in the EU.

The public consultation is until mid-February.
