Greeks travel to Bulgaria to buy cheap groceries

Photo: BGNES

Greeks prefer to buy goods from Bulgaria, Greek media report. The Greek opposition party Syriza accuses the government of failing to take action against high prices and forcing Greeks to buy their groceries in Bulgaria.

Residents of northern Greece told Greek media that they travel to Bulgaria every week, mainly for foodstuffs, which are much cheaper than on the Greek market. They buy flour, sugar, dairy products and even bread from Bulgaria and the prices are at least 30% lower, Greeks told Sky TV. The Consumers' Association of Greece says the only way out is to abolish taxes on basic goods.
