Bulgaria prevented about 180,000 illegal entry attempts in 2023

The border with Turkey was the busiest in terms of migration in 2023, according to an analysis by the Border Police. There was a 10% rise in illegal entry attempts compared to 2022. A total of 1,729 illegal migrants were apprehended.

More than 178,200 attempts of crossing illegally from Turkey to Bulgaria have been prevented.

In 2023, attempts by third-country nationals to cross illegally from Greece to Bulgaria decreased by 86% compared to 2022. 39 illegal migrants were detained and around 500 people returned to the interior of Greece on their own.

2,528 citizens of third countries were detained while trying to leave Bulgaria illegally, it was reported.
