The number of students in Bulgaria is currently close to 180 thousand. More than 116,000 students study for a bachelor's degree, 58,000 for a master's degree, and just over 5,000 students for the professional bachelor's degree. 92% of all of them are Bulgarian citizens. ‎

There are nearly 15,000 foreign students, with more than half (58.4%) of them studying in two professional areas - Medicine and Dentistry. ‎

The concentration of higher education institutions in Bulgaria is mostly in the South-Western region, where the capital Sofia is also located - 27. At the other extreme is the North-Western region of the country where only two higher education institutions are based, and four others operate through affiliates, the ‎National map of higher education shows.‎
