Toll system cameras will not be used for issuing speeding fines until the middle of 2024

Drivers cannot be fined for speeding based on photos from the cameras of the toll system, as the devices are not certified yet. This was what Minister of Regional Development, Andrey Tsekov, said in response to a question from MP Hristo Terziyski.

This refutes numerous statements of officials that with the help of the toll system, which is part of the Road Infrastructure Agency, the Traffic Police will issue electronic tickets for average speed. It has turned out that this is news from the future, and such fines under the Road Traffic Act are unlikely to occur before mid-2024. The toll system operates with 295 fixed and 55 mobile cameras, but these are yet to be certified, in order to be used by the police. The minister added that during an experiment for measuring the average speed of cars on the Northern speed tangent in Sofia, one out of four cars drove at a higher speed.
