The crewmen of the Ruen, the Bulgarian ship hijacked off the coast of Yemen, are not believed to be in immediate danger, Bulgarian National Radio correspondent Daniela Stoynova reported from Varna.

Eight Bulgarian sailors are among the international crew of the Maltese flagged bulk carrier. The ship was boarded by unidentified hijackers yesterday, December 14, about 400 nautical miles east of the island of Socotra in Yemen. The owner of the ship, Navigation Maritime Bulgare (Navibulgar), said that it was in contact with the families of the Bulgarian seamen. According to the information gathered so far, the ship is controlled by the hijackers and there is reason to believe that there is no immediate threat to the crew at the moment.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maria Gabriel said that in the case of the hijacked ship, Bulgaria was relying on the assistance of "all partners and institutions" to which it had sent information.
