Bulgarian football union chief resigns after fan and police violence

The president of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU), Borislav Mihailov, has resigned. The move follows riots by football fans outside the Vasil Levski National Stadium during the Bulgaria-Hungary match on 16 November.
"We would have done more if we had not turned into a blow-off valve (for all the pressure - ed.) I am resigning, I will not answer any questions. No club asked for my resignation, it was the clubs who elected me," Mihailov told the media. In a déjà-vu move, Mihail Kasabov has once again stepped in to temporarily replace Borislav Mihailov following his resignation. This came after another candidate - Emil Kostadinov - refused to replace Mihailov.
On 6 December, the BFU leadership will set a date for a congress to elect a new president. During the meeting of the football chiefs, there was increased police security outside the National Football Base building in Boyana.
