Livestock breeders threaten to hold protest on election day

Representatives of the livestock breeding sector in Bulgaria have threatened with protests on the day of the local elections - October 29, if by the end of the week they do not receive their outstanding compensation due to the consequences of the war in Ukraine. Funds were promised to them in September, for which a Memorandum was signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and livestock breeders and farmers.

According to the branch organizations, one hundred large farms, which are the backbone of the Bulgarian livestock industry, have not received a penny of support in the last 10 months. In this context, 50% of the milk in Bulgaria is imported, and it is dry milk. The situation is similar with meat, say farmers. Some of them threaten that if they do not receive assistance by the end of the week, they will ritually slaughter their animals on the roads.

"There is no reason for the livestock breeders' protests, the Memorandum is being strictly implemented," the Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement. 

From there, they point out that the payment of the promised funds is carried out in an accelerated manner. Since the signing of the Memorandum, BGN 381,633,157 (over EUR 195 million) have been paid out.
