Lawmakers vote to put whistleblowers under protection

Photo: BTA

With 112 votes in favour, 53 against and 4 abstentions, Parliament adopted at first reading amendments to the Whistleblower Protection Act that are in line with criticism of the implementation of a European directive.

The amendments will provide protection for whistleblowers who become aware of offences in the course of their work. Vazrazhdane, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and There is Such a People (ITN), who believe that this will encourage snitching, voted against it. In practice, whistleblowers would be employees, contractors, outside consultants and other persons who became aware of wrongdoing by their employer or contracting authority.
