UNESCO expands the borders of Old Nessebar architectural reserve with adjacent aquatoria

UNESCO has confirmed the extended boundaries of the world material cultural heritage in Bulgaria's Ancient Nessebar architectural reserve on the Black Sea coast. The 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which is being held in the Saudi capital Riyadh, added to the protected area also the water area around the Nessebar peninsula, the Ministry of Culture announced.



At Bulgaria's suggestion, the water areas south and north of the old Nessebar were added. Bulgarian underwater archaeologists have discovered there parts of the ancient and medieval fortress walls of the ancient town of Mesembria. The new area includes part of an ancient street, as well as defensive port facilities. 
During its many centuries of development, due to rising levels in the Black Sea, storms and earthquakes, the peninsula lost more than 1/4 of its land. Because of this, significant archaeological structures remain underwater today.
